Introduction: Media and Democratization – Experiences from Eastern Europe, Turkey and Pakistan

Abstract

Exploring connections between media and democratization, this issue of Eastbound will lead us from Eastern Europe to Southern Asia, and it will touch on several key factors, such as political influence, cultural change, and regulation. The introductory article briefly sets the stage and explains the context.

 

 

Arne Hintz is a Research Fellow at Central European University (CEU), Budapest, and McGill University, Montreal. He directed the CEU's Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) from 2007 to 2009. He holds a PhD in Political Science from University of Hamburg, Germany, and an MA in International Political Economy from University of Warwick, UK. His research focuses on media and communication policy, community/alternative/activist media, global governance and civil society. Currently he works on the project 'Mapping Global Media Policy' at McGill. Arne has been a media practitioner for many years, including print and online journalism, community radio and online activism. He took part in the preparation process leading towards the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), and he is a Board member of Community Media Forum Europe.
